Welcome to Shitennoji Chaya, a charming cafe nestled beside the historic Shitennoji Temple in the heart of Osaka. This delightful establishment shines as a beacon for tea lovers and dessert enthusiasts alike, offering a serene retreat from the bustling city. Here, you can immerse yourself in the rich culture of Japanese tea and savor a selection of exquisite sweets that highlight the best of matcha and traditional flavors.

As you step inside, you’re enveloped by the warm, inviting atmosphere, enhanced by the friendly service that greets you like an old friend. The decor reflects a blend of modern minimalism and traditional Japanese aesthetics, making it the perfect backdrop for a relaxing afternoon.

The star of the menu is undeniably the hot matcha, crafted with the finest ceremonial grade matcha sourced from Nishio, Japan. Each sip reveals a beautiful deep green hue, rich in umami, with a perfect balance of sweetness and smoothness that dances on your palate. For only JP¥900, this vibrant beverage embodies tranquility and tradition. Don’t miss out on pairing it with their warabi mochi or a slice of the Shitennoji roll cake, which customers rave about for its light, airy texture and subtle sweetness.

Another gem is the warm warabi mochi drink (JP¥780), a delightful treat that combines creamy milk topped with whipped cream and a drizzle of kuromitsu, providing a feast for both the eyes and taste buds. The mochi itself, silky and chewy, offers a unique experience that you will remember long after the last bite.

Guests appreciate the variety of offerings at Shitennoji Chaya, with one customer noting, "Damn good warabimochi drink after a temple run... the kuromitsu and matcha drinks are a must-have!" The thoughtful addition of an English menu ensures that international visitors feel welcomed and catered for. Every dish, from flavorful udon to wonderful shaved ice, has been crafted with an attention to detail that showcases the dedication of the staff.

Shitennoji Chaya is more than just a cafe; it is an experience—a place where you can pause, reflect, and indulge in the sweet delights of Japanese culinary culture. Whether you’re seeking a refreshing treat after a temple visit or a cozy spot to unwind with friends, this cafe is undeniably a must-visit location in Osaka. The place is located at a very convenient spot, after having walked the whole day we decided to stop quickly for something refreshing. I got the matcha shaved ice and there were sparkles of joy in my eyes. It was so delicious! It was the perfect matcha flavour, it hit me right in the feels. Thank you for this delicious treat :)

It's a tea house right besides the Shitennoji temple. It's a good place to rest after visiting the temple particular in a hot day. There was a wait to get in but they have a bench outside for you to use. The shaved ice is huge and the matcha roll cake is delicious.

Damn good warabimochi drink after a temple run from Tanimachi 9 Chome station. The kuromitsu and matcha drinks are a must-have. And opt for the fresh cream because it is absolutely delicious. Staff didn’t seem to pay attention to us outside despite the empty seats inside so that explains the minus one star.

Tried Shitennoji Chaya and really enjoyed it! The sweet and spicy beef udon was super flavorful, and the Warabimochi matcha drink was refreshing. Loved the chewy mochi bits. Finished it off with the matcha roll cake—light, not too sweet, and just really good. Definitely worth a visit!

The restaurant is the first place on your right as you face the temple. We ate Udon at a great place on the walkway to the Pagoda. We had a sampling of the delicious offerings on the menu. We had coffee and green tea and green Macha powdered chocolate dessert. Everything was great, and the service was fantastic. It's definitely worth a visit.
